Located in the vibrant business district of Allentown, just a short ride from downtown Pittsburgh, The Book Deli is a unique independent bookstore and the perfect third space for local bookworms. Embracing our signature deli-style theme, our Books by the Pound concept gives high-quality used books a second life and puts them back into the hands of readers of all ages. As a newly opened shop, our initial selection is limited, but we are slowly and carefully curating new products, titles from local authors, and unique sundries every single week. From browsing the growing shelves to attending our bookish events, there is always something fresh on the counter!
The Book Deli brings a unique literary concept to a space steeped in neighborhood history at 601 E. Warrington Ave. Founded by Carnegie native Dan Burns, the shop marks a deeply personal return to the historic streets of Allentown. During the 1930s and 1940s, our building was home to The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, commonly known as A&P. This is the exact location where Burns’ great-grandfather, Garner Combs, worked as a butcher, as seen in the historic photo on the left.
The deli connection runs even deeper, stretching back to the origins of the neighborhood itself. Allentown was named for butcher Joseph Allen, whose homestead once stood right near the back of the parcel where The Book Deli stands today.
